There are several theories. It probably derived from "bohunk" or "hunky", which were derogatory terms for Bohemian, Hungarian, and Polish immigrants back in the early 1900s. Black workers in the Chicago meat-packing plants started using it to mean any white person.
In 1967 black militants picked it up as a pejorative equivalent to "******". (Yahoo has automatically bleeped out the n-word).
In the early part of the 20th century, it meant a white john who honked his car horn while searching for a black prostitute.
Another possibility is that it is a blend of the Wolof (African) word "honq", meaning red, pink, of light complexion, and "hunky".
Some other origins have been proposed, but the first two seem the be the most likely.
