you can read or make flashcards. you can also try study books but it really depends on the subject, like if it was math i would say practice but if it was english i would say if you haven't already learned it you probably won't.

Review notes, reread important sections of the book, study with others, try to explain the topic to someone else, utilize study guides (if given), reread my notes again. If it's for a literature class, I usually skim through the book again. For math or other numbers classes, I try to do practice problems. Often times there are quizzes/questions at the end of chapters, do those. Flashcards don't help me, but I know some people like them. Other people I know rewrite their notes.

There are tons of ways to study, you just have to find the right way for YOU.

This depends on your learning style. If you didn't know theres visual, auditory and kinesthetic. How you study depends alot on these, check out the site listed. I'm a visual learner so, like someone else said I use flashcards and notes,

Personally i dont study.. cuz if i dont know it now i wont if i look over something.... but if i were to study i would look over my notes and trust that my teatchers gave these notes because they thought that that information was important!! sometimes looking over worksheets helps too...
