Excel sorting problem?

I have a problem with an excel database

There are about 300 entries in the database and the top row is frozed to display the headers.

In the past when i add a new record i put them in alpahbetical order without a problem, but now for some reason when i add new records and try to sort in alphabetical order the thing moves the header to its alphabetical order.

i need the header which is a frozen pane to stay where it is at the top. can anyone help? its never behaved like this in the past, maybe someone has changed something but i cant work out how to get it back

please help

Update:

Thanks guys

I'v sorted the problem by selecting the "Header row" radio button,... but if i wanted to use the toolbar button which has an arrow pointing down with the letter "A" & "Z" could i set it to automatically exclude the header from the sort?

This usually happens if one of your columns is missing a header. Make sure there are no empty cells in the header row and it should work.

Failing that, you can also do as the others have said and either select just the data first or choose Sort from the Data menu and make sure the Header Row radio button selected.

    Hope this helps

    Excel Sorting Problems

It sounds like you are sorting the table in a different way than normal.

Don't select the whole table, just click on a cell anywhere inside the table and select sort, this should automatically select all the data and not the header row.

Then, make sure you select "my data range has...header row" at the bottom of the dialogue box.

If you select the whole table including the header row, you will also search the header row and it will ignore the fact that you have one.

if this doesn't work, e-mail me loathsomedog@yahoo.co.uk. I work on excel every day!

    good luck

In the sort screen there is an option at the bottom for Header row or no header row. Make sure header row is selected and it should leave the header row and sort the rest.

When you sort the data and define the sorting criteria, there is a radio button which says "Header Row".

Click it on to use the first row as the header row and not to be included in sorting.

    Hope it helps.

    Either:

Do not include your header row in the sort range you highlight

    OR

If you do include the header row, ensure you click the button saying 'My data range has a header row' - this option is at the bottom of the sort parameters window.

freezing the pane does not stop the row from being included in the sort.

To stop the top row from being included in the sort when you go into the sort change option to my range has header row or if it is more than one row do not include it when you select the range to sort. .

It sounds like you are selecting the header row as well as the data rows when you sort. fix this and it will be ok again.

All the answer given are correct... but the solution is much more simple… format the header in “bold”… excel automatically ‘realizes’ that the first line of info is the heather… Let me know if this works for you

insert a row after header, select and sort the data(dont select header), remove the inserted blank row.
