I would take a shower basket (something to carry to showers) and fill it with basic toiletries, like q-tips, toothbrush, shave cream, shavers, soap, wash cloth. and put the basket in a yaffa block. fill the rest of the block with a robe, slippers, hand towels, a huge pack of pens, some legal pads, post its, stapler, scissors, ummmm..... stamps and stationary might be useful.... hmmm... oh yeah... food with a long shelf life... pop tarts, raman noodles, cup o soup, cheese/crackers, goldfish, even juice boxes (they make iced tea).... these are the little things that can become hard to get if they don't have a car or need it when the cafeteria is closed or school store is closed. oh yeah, if you don't like yaffa blocks, use a pop up laundry basket

gift cards are ok if they have a car to get to the store, or back from the store with all their crap

Gift cards to certain places such as Wal-Mart or Target, McDonald's, JcPenney, a gas station etc... No actual cash!

I suggest not giving it to him/her until school starts or even better, mid-semester.
