i am native texan and must concur with the other answerers. while there were rumors about the bowie mine - which were never substantiated, no gold was ever found.
i will give you a link here to read up on the subject
http://www.texfiles.com/features/gold.htm
it would subsequently be senseless to stake a claim since there simply is nothing to claim for.
sorry to disappoint you

I have lived in Texas all my life. (54 years). Never heard of a place to pan gold. There is a legend that Jim Bowie (hero of Alamo) had a gold mine, but no one has ever found it and maybe it was never real.

I'm a native texan , never heard of such.
I have never seen or heard of any precious metals in Texas besides oil. Which should be as good a gold these days.
Best wishes

I agree with everybody above me and I'm just a next door neighbor to Texas (New Mexico) Lots of gold mines here.
In addition to the great link the person above me gave you here is the link to the department that regulates minerals
Best of luck to you don't pick up pyrites
