    Hi,

Two years ago we were using:

    Electricity 11,300 KWH

Heating 35,000 KWH (1300 gal propane)

Water Heating 8,400 KWH (310 gal propane)

    Car 38,700 KWH ( 1060 gal gasoline)

Total 93,400 KWH, and 64,800 lbs of CO2

    Pretty staggering

We have since managed to cut all of these in half and the green house gas emissions in half as well.

This is saving us $4000 in energy costs per year.

I have a family of three. We use about twenty five gallons of gas a month in the vehicle. I thank God that I live in a small town so I don't have to drive a whole lot and for other reasons to. My home is all electric. I don't use natural gas at all. My average electric use is around 1000 kWh per month. My water is free so I have no idea as to how much I use every month. So to sum it all up. I use about 300 gallons of gasoline a year. 12000 kWh every year. Zero natural gas and water is unknown. I live in Montana.

EDIT: Electricity here is .069 cent per kWh.

Well.. for a 4 br house I'm averaging under $100 a month electricity at 15 cents/kwh and I have yet to exceed the minimum charge for water/sewer service.

sorry the house is all-electric, so no gas.

I really don't know, except that I have cut down on everything tremendously. For instance:

I wash most clothing in cold water (full loads only)

I now use the sleep-timers on my TV and stereo

I keep lights off when the TV is on

I hang my clothing to dry on the line

I wash dishes only once per day

I have turned the temp on my water heater down

I started lowering the thermosdat in winter, and raising it in summer

I did replace all light bulbs with the eco-friendly ones

I do not use the oven, at all, in the summer

*I have a swamp cooler--not an air conditioner--I don't know if this is a good or bad thing--but my bills are much lower than neighbors with air conditioners.

Like some other posters, we used to use much more energy until we did some simple improvements around the house. I.e. we have reduced 1,000 kw a month to abou 750 by installing some 'starter' solar kits. One of the easiest places to start on a solar project is water heating - i.e. home use for showers, dishes, etc. AND swimming pools.

However you can buy solar kits to start replacing some of your on grid electricity for a few hundred dollars. With tax credits and energy bill savings, they pay for themselves pretty quickly. Right now we try to roll most of the savings into more solar energy products.

If you don't have much money to invest, one of the cheapest places to start going solar is with a range of solar battery charges for gadgets like cellphones, ipods, etc.
