Detailed question ~ diagnostic help?

My jeep cherokee (91) is fine when I keep her in town. When I take her on the highway and then come to a stop, a funny "whirring" sound comes from the rear end. No, it is NOT the normal "jeep sound". She likes to leak oil, and I know I need a new rear main seal. Are these connected at all? Or do you think it is something else?

Update:

ONLY when I am stopped. I had suspected the fuel pump was having difficulties, but I wanted a brainstorm of backyard mechanics' opinions, too. Thank you!

If you said it makes the noise when your are stopped? Or when you are coming to a stop. The rear end which is far away from the (rear main seal on the back of the engine,)should not affect the rear end.The rear end makes a noise when the jeep is in motion, and the noise will change pitch, depending on acceleration or deceleration. If the sound is there when stopped then the fuel pump, could be in question. If the sound is there as your coming to a stop, then the rear end is suspect.

If it only starts to "whir" after you stop, I'm afraid I wouldn't be of much help to you; I'd have to hear it myself. If the "whir" gets a higher pitch the faster you go, the gears in your rear end could be getting worn out, or you could be low on gear oil. The rear main seal and a whirring sound from the rear end shouldn't be connected, but I have been wrong before. You could also check your transfer case oil..just in case the whirring sound isn't traveling down the driveshaft to the rear end. Hope that helps a little!
