My modem suddenly connects at half the kbs it did. Dial up. why?

Is the problem likely my modem, my phone line, my IPS, a virus?

Used to connect at 45.2 kbs, now at 21.6 or less. Sure slows . things down! I checked for loose wires. e machine less than one year old. xp.

It also disconnects a lot.

Update:

I ran a modem test. The log said my CTS was low and falling. A search did not show anything about modems. What is CTS and how do I get it back to normal.

Your phone line may have become noisey. Disconnect the modem and plug a regular phone and listen to it. Try disconnecting any other phones that might be sharing the modem line. Also listen for static and scratchy sounding noise on the phone line. This is usually a problem after a rain storm.
