Adults,..Who has had raising car insur. rates due to letting your teen get a license and drive?

When my son wanted to get his permit at 15 in TX, the jump in my insurance was over $2,000! Waiting until he turned 16 dropped that to "only" $850 and only then if I limited him to the old VW Camper which was liability only.

Prior to putting him on the policy, my annual bill was around $475 per year. So, the rule of the house was if he wanted to drive, he'd have to get a job and pay the increased insurance cost. He opted to wait until he was 18 when the insurance hit was a slightly more modest $650.

It has been awhile my "boys" are now almost 40 years old.

Here's what we did. The boys waited until 21 to get drivers licenses and we put the money saved in their college funds. It was a substantial amount!

One thing not mentioned by some other parents. Many insurance companies will lower rates for students with good grades. Guess they figure if a kid is taking time to study they are not out all hours of the night taking risks in a car.

Different insurance companies vary. Your best bet is to call you insurance company and find out exactly.

You drive carefully have no points aginst your licence and then! Have a Kid on your insurance ouch! Let be take a moment to say congratulations he made it to 15 feel old now? Something you can do that will help bonding is attend a "Drivers Edge" car control course. That will teach skid control and how to keep the car under control and take the course with them. Drivers Ed is a Joke, I beleave in gradulated licences and not letting boy's and girl's alone with friends in the car at night for the first year. Or longer if there is an accident or tickets. The amount of insurance does not begin to match the feeling you will get handing them the keys knowing you have taught them all you can.

I think mine went up like 40% and boy was I floored when I got the bill . of course you dont say what part of the country you are in so it could depend on your location too . good luck .

what ever it goes up, he'd be payin at least half right out of the gate. he'll have time to get to understand responsibility, while making the money....and hopefully that will carry over when he starts to drive, by his self.
