How do toxic metals exactly affect a fish's kidneys?

I know that toxic metals in water from things such as paints, garden pesicides, anti-freeze (which is used in cars), car batteries (cadmium) and mercury (from mercury mines and thermometers), affect the kidneys of a fish.

But what exactly happens to the fish's kidneys?

It wouldnt affect the kidneys unless the levels were extremely high. Otherwise the metal would just accumulate in the fats, muscle, etc.
