I am trying to sew together squares for an afghan...It says to put wrong sides together and insert needle in b
back loop of each side - what do they mean...help??

I assume that the squares are crochet? If they are then you should see two loops (one behind the other) for each stitch across. They sort of look like a "v".
When you put the wrong sides together, the back loops are the ones that are closest to each other in each piece.
Sewing through the only the back loops gives a different look to the front than sewing through both loops.

when you complete a stitch there are two loops as seen from the top they form a v the back loop is the one that is facing away form you if this doesnt help try looking up learning to crochet or reading crochet patterns

I agree with Marilyn... Use a yarn needle. I crocheted my squares to gather one time ... it didn't look good.
