no its not stealing I asked the guy at the best buy and he says as long as it's your cd you can do anything with the music but technically you can't borrow someone Else's cd and burn their music onto an mp3 or ipod

Its not, because when you buy a CD the copyright allows you to make personal copies for your own use only. If you choose to share it on a peer-to-peer program like Limewire then it becomes illegal.

No, it is considered reasonable to make a copy for personal use.
But if you rip another copy to your friend's MP3, that's a breach of copyright.

Open source adaptation of material from any artist can only enhance their reach. Its when you get into reselling that compilation as a mix tape that ethics are challenged

No, because you paid for it in the first place. Selling it/putting it on filesharing networks is illegal. Though there aren't many people who have actually got done for that kind of thing...

Not if you are the only person who has it. If you share it with someone else then it does get classed as theft.
