Replacement keys?
I've lost my key for my 2004 Ford KA, I have a spare but it only opens the doors, and won't start the engine due to the immobiliser in the key fob. I've rung Ford and they're talking about £96 for reprogramming a key and £17 for a new key.
Is this right or is there a cheaper alternative? Also will they come to my house to do this as I can't actually drive the car to them... (I'm in the UK)
Thanks. I've rung a different dealer and he's saying £130 to reprogram it and £42 for 2 new keys. wth. Also they don't seem to be able to come to my house, they insist I must somehow get the car to them. Do you know if they do house visits, EasyGo?
Thanks for replies. If it was as simple as getting a new key from Ford I wouldn't hesitate, but I'm not willing to pay them in excess of £150 to stick a key in the ignition and turn it 3 times.

Yep, they've got you and they know it. These newer cars have a chip in it and it's quite expensive to replace. My car came with two keys and a valet key for parking. It supposedly would operate the car but not open the trunk.
The only alternative is turn your house upside down and do a spring cleaning in hopes of finding your lost keys.

There must be 2 keys available that are already programmed in order to use the key cycling procedure. That is for a spare key. In order to program new keys, the module must be accessed, the old keys erased, and the new keys programmed to the module. This takes about a half hour to do, and that's all you should be charged, plus the key cost of course. There is no other way to do it, by design. You could always call a local dealer, if there is one near you, and ask who's the best electrical guy in the shop. Then call and have him paged and talk to him and see if he would come to you and do this....but even with that you may not save much....and he may not be able to borrow expensive shop equipment. Not trying to let you down, but it is designed to be hard to steal, and thusly becomes a pain when keys are lost. I keep one unprogrammed key under the rear of my vehicle, and one programmed key well hidden inside. And three more programmed at my home.

Check your owners manual. With some Fords you can program a key yourself. You need to buy a key with the chip that has not been programed yet. You wont be able to do this now as you have lost the only key you have with a program in it. When you get the new key buy some keys with the chip from the dealer and program some extras. Sometimes you can do as many as 7 keys. You should be able to get a replacement key without re programing your car? He should be able to get enough information from you over the phone to make your new key.

YES. I bought keys on ebay that came w/ instructions on how to program. I would say look there and/or do a google/yahoo search. I'm sure you'll find something.
and don't limit your search to the ford ka.

i got a key for my mustang and all they need is the title showing proof of ownership and then they can cut a new key from the vin number.Think about it--- they are protecting you. If I came in and wanted a key with no proof of ownership for your car would you want them to make one for me?Then I could come over and take your car and drive it away. You must show onership papers and picture id

Sorry, you'll have to spend the money. There is a chip in the key that is programmed to your vehicle. Thank you modern technology.
