What year & model? I have a 96 Lincoln Towncar with a similar problem, but is has computer controlled variable power assist (which means 2 sensors, a stepper motor and control module in addition to the pump and gear box). I replaced a stiff suspension link into the spindles and upper ball joints. It helped but the problem still shows up when its hot and the car has been driven a while. No leaks, belt and fluids are fine, but I have noticed the fluid is "hot" when the problem shows up. So I am focusing on the pump or gear box. I'd be interested in what you find.

Check the level of power steering fliid. If low add some, usually why the steering wheel is hard to turn because of low fluid.

This may very well not have to do with the power steering. Since this is a smaller car it most likely has a rack and pinon steering set up. There could very well be a problem with that being it not being greased, bend rods, or bad mounts. I would not jump to it being you power steering.

It may need fluid. The belt may be slipping when you put a lot of pressure on it. You will need a mechanic to visually check it out. The pump could be going bad to. Pops

thing,s to check......fluid level, belt tension, condition of pressure hose,s.......if all this is good & you have no leak,s......your power steering pump would be the prime suspect!.......be sure the drive belt is clean&tight.....there is a check valve built into the steering gear box....but this kind of job is not very user friendly........good luck!

Like Many Other's said, Its a Ford.
Check your Fluid, if that doesnt work, go to a GM or Chrysler dealership
