Do hospitals steal from the goverment?

My friend went to emergency for an allergy, she is pregnant, she was there like 1 hour or so, they gave her a pill, a shot and an ultrasound. They send her the bill for $3400, the insurance covered everything, but is that the real cost for that ?

Thanks !

Update:

Well, she did an ultrasound in a private doctor, and they charged her $150.

Thanks !

pretty standard cost especially since she had to have the ultrasound done (any type of radiology test is going to be expensive due to the equipment being used).

most hospitals are not for profit which means that any money they recieve go directly to patient care. paying for medications, new equipment, supplies, etc.

hospitals have to send a detailed bill to the insurance company when they file the claim. if they do not disclose all treatment provided-they run the risk of being fined a large amount.

Ironically, it is the other way around. The government (Medicare and Medicaid) does not pay hospitals enough, so the hospitals have to set their prices higher in order to cover their costs.

That kind of bill sounds about standard, these days. It is a good thing she has good insurance!
