Well, it can be both healthy and unhealthy. If you are diligent about changing your top coat (at least once a week, removing the old and starting fresh), it can be very beneficial to keeping your nails strong and healthy (no peeling). If you leave the topcoat on to long, it can cause them to discolor and turn yellow. If this does happen - just remove the polish and soak in lemon juice to bring the color back to a healthy one. Choose a quality topcoat - not the 88 cents one, when applying directly to your nails!

It's not healthy at all, and using nail polish remover makes things worse. If you like the look of highly polished nails, buff them. There are a million kinds out there. My favorite is Tweezerman, which makes a great 3-step block that is easy to use and makes your nails shine like crazy - and there are instructions on the package. It takes some time the first time you use it (10-15 minutes), but you can use the Step 3 (polishing) side every day and it'll look like you've used polish and that only takes a couple minutes max. The thing about buffing your nails is that while you're putting the shine on, you're also massaging your nails/nail beds and that's really good. Massaging both strengthens and promotes growth. If you do this regularly, it'll become a habit and you'll have the best nails around. With the block, I use Step 1 about once a month; it smooths out bumps and ridges. Step 2 I use about once a week, and that smooths out the roughness from the coarse Step 1. Then Step 3 you can use daily, hourly, a couple times a week, whatever, just for shine. You don't have to just buy Tweezerman. There are a bunch of buffers out there and you can find them in any cosmetics department of any store.
Source(s): I've been doing this for about 5 years and get complimented on my nails almost every day, even when they're short (I'm a healthcare worker so I keep them short most of the time). - 1 decade ago
Don't use put any type of polish on your nails. I prefer natural looking nails and used to wear a clear coat of polish on my nails but they were constantly splitting and peeling. I read this article that said wearing polishing on your nails prevents them from "breathing" therefore causing them to split, peel. yellow, etc. Anyway, I stopped wearing any nail polish and I rub hand lotion into my nails all the time. They look awesome, really long and healthy. Also, make sure you wear gloves when cleaning or washing dishes. If you do all this, you should notice a major difference within a few weeks.

Unhealthy. Your nails need time to breath, so putting on a clean coat every day can infact hurt your nails. Some women who always have toenail polish on end up with yellow toenails underneath their polish!! Pretty gross i know! I would suggest putting on a clear coat maybe once a week or once every two weeks.

Use the Nail RX products, which are reasonably priced, and can be purchased at most drugstores. Try the base coat, which did wonders to my dry, cracked nails. Then, follow up with whatever color you want, and then a top coat, if you choose. The product works amazingly, good luck!

its not good to keep it on all the time because your nails are made up of tiny cells and those cells need to breath and since theres no viens going through your nails they cthe cells have to get it another way
so if u keep nail polish on all the time ur nails will have a tendency to be more brittle and break easier

Well having nail polish on your hands kind of breaks down its health and everything. i think that you should have nail polish on for a week and then take it off for a week. that way your nails can breath and stay healthy.

yeah it does work. i do it all the time.. just apply the coat, and i always apply a new one each day so the layer already there is strengthened even more. but i don't think its unhealthy or healthy.. its just something we women do for beauty.. :) lol..
