Setting up a home network...?

How can I go about setting up a home network, between two computers.

One is upstairs and the other downstairs so wires arent really an option... they are both connected to the internet, and they are both wirelessly linked to our router (BT Voyager 2091? I think)

Is it possible I can connect the computers using the router? If so how?

If not any other ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Gary

hopefully your on XP if so go into network connections in control panel and click on set up home or small office network on the right. on both computers then goto my computer and go into my computer click on tools menu at the top and click on map network drive and follow that through. it can be a pain but you'll get there in the end.

Source(s): oh yeah and right click on yoru hardrive or folders that you want to share and select sharing then set it to share before you do the map network bit

You want to share files and printer between the two computers, right?

If both running windows, shouldn't be a problem.

First, you want to make sure they are both in the same workgroup.

Start > right click on My Computer > Select Properties > Computer Name tab> Change ID. Under workgroup, type in what ever name you desire for your network. Both computers should have the same workgroup name.

Right click the folders (the files should be in a folder) > select Properties > Sharing tab > Enable sharing.

If you want to share printer, the same process.

Go to My Network Places > view workgroup computers. You should see the workgroup name, and double click on it, the unique computer name will show and click on the specific computer you want to see the files or folders you've shared eariler.

    Hope this helps!

Good answers so far. Just to add. Once your share your drive or folder (Win 9X, ME, W2K, XP, and Vista) you can map the drive by just typing the name of the computer or known IP address with "\\" i.e. \\192.168.1.1 or \\computername in Windows Explorer. You don't necessarely need to be in the same Workgroup.

If you use Windows security (NTFS partition) you will need to assign rights for read/write and probably assign the account/group that can access the share drive. If ask a password type the administrator or account that have the level of access to perform the action and hit remember password.

Assuming you have Windows XP or higher.

Run the wireless network setup on one PC. Then copy the required files to a pen dirve using the wizard.

Then puit your pen drive in the other PC and run the set up.

    The network should initialize.

For file sharing you need to right click on the required directory and select sharing.

Printer sharing is quite easy too using the same principle.

The easy way is to share the printer on the desktop machine, then search for the shared printer from the laptop. I can't give a step-by-step because I'm not running Xp here, but that method should get you there, as long as both machines connect to the same router/hub. It's something like - Start - Control Panel - printers - right-click the printer and choose properties. Somewhere in the properties is the option to share this printer. good luck.

    good solutions so far .

well what you have to do is buy one wireless ethernet card from pc world, dixons,or from maplin store and insert in to the motherboard (dont worry its easy just open your cpu and then insert this card into the white colour slots ) of your computer upstairs and then restart your pc .and additionally connect the router to your computer down stairs .

when you restart your computer upstairs it display the message wireless networks detected click that message and select the network you are on .thats it you are ready to go .you can share your printer as well .

there is one more alternate instead of buying wireless ethernet card you can buy a wirless usb for internet and insert it in the pc usb port but the speed will be less than wireless ethernet card that sits in your pc .so the choice is yours .

hope you know what to do now .if you need more help please do wirte me .

If they are both talking to the Router to get internet then you should only have to share the drive and maybe put them in the same workgroup. To share the drive just go to My Computer and right click the drive then go to sharing. To change the workgroup, right click on My Computer and go to properties then network identification.

of course you can, it is a wireless router then you need a wireless adaptor for the downstairs computer or vice a versa. but you need an adaptor to make it work on the network. that way your computer can pick up the frequency from the wireless router, that is how I connect wirelessly.. get a wireless adaptor.. to make it work.
