What year is your S-10? If it's a check engine light, and not a maintenance light, it has nothing to do with the oil.
To find out more about the problem you could go down to autozone or another parts store and have them pull the code. The code will give you an idea of what is going on with the vehicle, and where.
To truly find the problem though, you need to have a diagnostic service performed... a good shop can do that for you, doesn't have to be the dealer, but I wouldn't use just any shop for it.
If it's a 96 I don't think there is a maintenance, or oil change reminder light. Call a few shops, try to find one that specializes in diagnostics and ask their prices. Hopefully you can find one that takes the time to explain a little about the light, and the process they use to determine the problem. Some shops just say "80 bucks to diagnose" while others are better at giving you information and explaining the process.

Most 1996 or newer, take it to autozone, they will read the codes for free. some 1996 and older can be done with a paperclip and the internet there is a connector right near the steering column on the driver side (above where your legs would be) generally speaking, the upper row far right and second from right need to be shorted then the key turned to the ON position (do not start the car), it will flash once then pause then 2ce then long pause then once then pause (a total of 4 times for a code 12 which is diagnostic mode. then it will flash the code thats stored causing the light/issue. Post the code and youll know whats up.

is it the check engine light or change oil light --year ? if it is the check engine light if it is a newer s-10 the light can only be turned off by a scanner that most shops have
