    The partially dried sample contains 50 g of silica, 7 g of water and 43 g of other materials per 100 g of sample.

    If the sample only lost x g of water then

    (7 + x) / (100 + x) = 12 / 100 or x = 5.7 g

    Thus silica = 100 x 50 /(100 + 5.7) = 47.3 %
