Will the Red Sox make a move by the trade deadline for a new shortstop?

Only one detail needed: Julio Lugo sucks.

Update:

Starks, apparently you dont know the Red Sox and Theo.

Also, yes it would be nice to have Hanley, but he was a huge piece in landing Beckett and Lowell in Boston. Without them, the Sox wouldnt care about a hole at short, they would be worried about third base and pitching.

Update 2:

Derrick H, they never mess with their lineup midseason? Are you drunk? They only traded away a Boston legend and hero in 2004, the year they won, but yea you're right, they never mess with it mid season.

Update 3:

Enough with the NL success. I dont care how good Rentaria, Sanchez and Hanley are all doing in the NL. The NL sucks, especially pitching. Can I get some real answers please? From people who watch baseball like, this year?

I say they won't but there is a slim chance of trading for a shortstop.

As a die hard red sox fan, this question is one I feel I should answer. I can't say that the Red Sox are going to trade Julio Lugo but if I had to make that call, I would trade him. Lugo isnt going what we signed him to do in Boston, he isnt that great playing the shortstop position, while making a few good plays he has made his fair share of errors this season which isnt going to cut it in Boston. And he is hitting in the .220 area in terms of a batting average and that is aweful seeing that he hits in Fenway Park and is a right handed batter, use the Monsta for god sake. And unforuntally, he is playing in Boston and being a shortstop in Boston is hard to do, you have to be good or your gone. Be it from Johnny Pesky to Nomar, we have had our fair share of great shortstops, but not this year. We haven't had a solid shortstop since 2004 with Nomar/Orlando Cabera. Watching baseball tonight lastnight and seeing how well Orlando is doing out on the west coast makes me still wish we had him back playing short at Fenway. And one player that was in our farm system I wish we hadn't traded away was Freddy Snachez, he was the N.L. batting shamp last year and he would have made a solid shortstop for the sox.

To respond to the answer giving about Edgar Renteria, the sox traded him because he didnt do a damn thing in Boston, so we trade him to Atlanta and look at how well he is doing. I honest would want Nomar to come back and play for the Sox, i loved Nomar and still do no matter what team it is he is playing for.

I would have to agree with the fact that Lugo is not having the greatest year thus far........Good God, hes only batting .213, so sad, and he makes alot of money to play on that team, and he's still in the lead off position. But he does have 34 RBI and 17 SB, so he is doing something, his hitting is really lacking though.I read an article on redsox.com yesterday that mentioned if Lugo's struggles continue through the month, he will be moved lower in the lineup, no talk of a trade though.

Obviously if Theo thought Julio sucked he wouldnt be playing still. He is a very good defensive player. Alex Cora would replace him or maybe even Pedroia before the ever trade Lugo. He will come around.. give it time.

They really need to! Lugo really does suck. If they can't find a good replacement at SS here's a possibility. Move Pedroia over to SS and trade for Jorge Cantu in TB. He was awesome 2 years ago and then he got hurt. A change of scenery might bring back the .286-28-117 guy.

Yes, they will make a trade for a SS. Rumors are already starting. Lugo is not going to last the year in Boston. They will get a lesser known player with better stats.

She loves me, she love me not! Same old story in Boston where they always try to make a trade at the deadline but are restricted due to salary payroll.

Only when they had to dump Nomar (Mrs Hamm) did Theo pull his magic.

    Manny might go

    Lugo might go

    Lowell might go

    Beckett might go

For you American leagues wanna be's check out the hot shortstop in Colorado with an incrddible rocket arm, Troy Tulowitzki.

As for Theo and his budget he will stand pat with Lugo becuse he spent his bounty on Dice-K!

i wouldn't single out julio lugo as sucking...but yeah he isn't up to par in average and on base percentage....sure jd drew hasn't been doing that well....neither has hinske or pena....but i'm not sure who will want him or who we can pick up...i mean we'd need somebody fast...who can steal bases (so crisp isn't the only real base stealer) but it wouldn't hurt to have some power

personally this would be one of the times i'd be wishing for nomar garciaparra back....i'd like to see a move for a utility player like that....i mean speed would help get somebody on base so that when big papi or manny hit homers...people will be on base.....

i doubt they'll make a big move unless the yankees are approaching really quickly....the sox have it easy now against the rockies and the giants....so lugo still has some time to get better....but at this point i see trading lugo and drew.....maybe even hinske....i wonder who we'd get

i wouldn't be surprised if crisp goes too....i'm not recommending moving A LOT of people...but 1-2 would be fine....if we could get carl crawford (a combo of speed and power) for the outfield and maybe dump hinske/crisp or even both

i wouldn't be surprised if bernie williams makes a comeback either...how sick would it be if he plays for boston and beats up the yankees...

    I don't think they'll deal for a SS.

I think the Red Sox are going to be patient with Lugo, like they were with Pedroia, where it has certainly paid off.

They like Lugo's speed and his ability to drive in runs. He's no gold glover, but he does the job defensively. So even if his batting average isn't where it should be, he's being productive enough to justify keeping him in there every day.

Why would they make a deal?

They just signed Lugo in the offseason.

You had Edgar Renteria the previous year and you traded him off too.

I wonder if how the Sox would be if they hadn't trade Hanley Ramirez. (I love the kid's game)

I don't think they will...what they should do is move someone else into the lead-off spot. Lugo is good enough to win a championship with...he just shouldn't be lead-off
