How can I help stop animal shelters from killing the animals?

We have a humane society and an animal control shelter. The humane society is nice and has advertising so most people go there to get animals. The animal control shelter is where strays go that have been picked up or people drop off. It is not a nice attractive place. Animal control only keeps the animals nine days and then they put them down. With hardly no advertising and little money, barely no one comes in to adopt. So most of these poor animals are put down.

How can I help build up this place so more people come in and less animals die. The manager is real controlling and doesn't let us do much. But we can give him ideas. We already told him petfinder.com and he said ok.

But what other ways can I help get people in and adopt?

that's rather unusual,i thought the only reason shelters put dogs down was if they were sick,or in the USA Ive seem if there food aggressive they cant be re homed

to get some one to adopt an animal is a personal choice ,if people did not buy animals and then dump them and had them neutered in the first place we would not have such a problem with UN wanted animals

Do you have a local television station? Call the station manager or the head newscaster & tell them about your "plight". Sometimes they will be happy to do a morning or afternoon "adopt-a-pet" segment & showcase animals for adoption. They might also be interested in hosting a fund raiser to collect donations of money, unopened pet food, & pet toys that could be used as an extra incentive to be given out when a pet is adopted from the shelter. Other than that, it sounds like your area is in need of education to have their animals spayed & neutered, so that this problem of unwanted animals can become less of a problem for you & your community. It's a sad thing to see & work around, but if these animals were not picked up or turned in & they roamed the streets freely, then your town would have a big health & safety problem. The key is education of the public & until then, euthanizing these animals seems to be the only other solution. I'm in California & many counties are starting to have MANDATORY spay & neuter programs to stop the overpopulation in the kennels & shelters. If you want to keep your animal intact, then you must have a breeders liscense, which is costly. If your animal is picked up, it is automatically fixed & there is nothing you can do about it! This is a big problem & people have to learn about being RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERS to put an end to this sadness. I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors!

You are fighting a losing battle. There are already too many cats and dogs out there. Plus, you'll notice that almost all the dogs at the animal control shelter are the less desirable ones - older and bigger. Certain breeds are in such demand breeders can't keep up, while others are so unwanted - mostly mongrels - that they'll never be adopted.

We've discovered, sadly, that a dog or cat kept in a shelter environment for more than a few months develops severe behavioral problems - you can call them mental problems if you like - that make it impossible to place them anywhere. These difficulties make life for these poor creatures untenable and frankly my dear, putting them down is kindness.

One thing you obviously don't know is that all those shelters that advertise themselves as "no-kill" actually do not kill - they bring their un-adoptable animals to the animal control shelter and turn their backs while animal control kills the critters for the "no-kill" folks. Hypocrisy? Just a touch, I think you'd agree...

Sorry, honey, but the brutal reality is, we have to keep putting these unfortunate creatures down. If you really want make a significant impact - convince all your friends and neighbors to spay or neuter their pets.

The problem is this: there are too many animals and too few people. You can try to help increase the adoption rate, but the reality of the situation is that too few pets are spayed or neutered.

Around here (Kansas City) there are no-kill shelters that focus on getting animals homes. Most state-funded humane societies just can't afford that.

I would start by raising money for the humane society. This is more than just increasing the adoption rating. You can TRY to have an adoption fest, but the problem is that then you run into pet lovers who just adopt more animals to avoid them from being killed when they can't afford to properly care for another animal anyway.

Contact PETA for ideas. Contact local newspaper - our paper, the Tulsa World, has a weekly column of pets for adoption w/ pics. Find out when various public events will be, like the Renaissance Festival, and arrange to have an adoption booth. Contact PetSmart store in your town to have adoptions periodically. And thank you for your efforts.

Every pet disserves a home. Make a protest to any animal shelter, or sue them if they kill another helpless animal. It's not right. Animals are sharing the planet with us, and it is ruining the creation of God.
