Fantasy Trade - Good or ?????

Okay - I am in a veteran, 12 team H2H league, good-sized rosters. There are 10 hitting categories and 8 pitching. There is little pitching available worth a darn on the wire. I am set pretty well in pitching and hitting, and in 1st by 2 games at the present time - so would you make the following deal?

You give: Jim Thome, Ian Kinsler, John Maine

You Get: Chase Utley, Garrett Atkins

Best Answer gets the 10 - give your reasoning or don't bother responding - which end do you take?

I'd do it to get Utley.

For the next 100 games, bank on

    Utley 70 R, .300, 18 HR, 70 RBI, 10 SB

    Atkins 60 R, .290, 13 HR, 60 RBI, 5 SB

    Thome 60 R, .280, 22 HR, 70 RBI, 0 SB

    Kinsler 50 R, .270, 12 HR, 45 RBI, 15 SB

You could lose a bit of power (3-5 HR), given that Thome hits as he usually does. Fortunately, you would gain 20 R and 15 RBI. Utley's a major upgrade on Kinsler (god, he's a beast). Plus, you're gaining a guy at 3B who's got some upside and-- despite his current woes-- is still getting on base, and is still hitting in a relatively formidable lineup. Thome doesn't really play a position; if any of your 10 cats are defensive, he does not help you at all there. My point is, you're actually comparing Utley, Atkins, and (insert your new 1B here) to Kinsler, Thome and (insert your current 3B here). I get the feeling that the actual upgrade is even bigger than is listed.

For your addition, you also give up the difference between a waiver-wire pickup in your rotation and

    10 W, 110 K, 3.20 ERA, 1.20 WHIP

on the rest of the season.

Some possible additions (for comparison's sake):

    Blanton: 8 W, 80 K, 3.70 ERA, 1.20 WHIP

    Guthrie: 7 W, 65 K, 3.30 ERA, 1.15 WHIP

    Gallardo: (the sky's the limit)

Basically, it looks like you give 2-3 W, 30-35 Ks, and a little bit on your ERA for a major upgrade at 2B, and some upside on the rest of the season at 3B. I'd go for it.

    Well, I'd probably take it...

Utley is a stud; no question there...he is in a league of his own and getting those big numbers in a relatively weak position is pretty good. As for Atkins, I do believe he will get out of his funk...obviously his numbers won't be like last yrs but definately servicable...just make sure you have a backup at 3rd

As for Thome, he is a great ballplayer...but lets be honest, he doesnt stay healthy and will most likely get hurt again by the end of the season (something you really shouldnt worry w/ Utley, due to youth). Kinsler has been really hot but mired in a really bad slump, he get out of it...but will be no where close to Utley. Maine: personally, I don't like him...but his numbers are good and on a good team...thing here is this, If you have the pitching...DO IT!

Thome/Kinsler for Utley still isnt that great...but relatively close w/ the person getting Utley having a slight upside...so the trade is basically Maine for Atkins....not too bad, esp. since it sounds like your league has a slight hitting-bias

I'd do it...get a TOP hitter...and your not losing much

Dave what the hell logic are you using here. "Utley is probably the best 2nd baseman in the MLB" Are you CRAZY? In the MLB for 2nd basemen it goes Utley and then everyone else doesnt really matter. I would like to know who you think is better than Utley and next year give me an invite to your league so I can clean house. Would you get Utley already. Atkins is heating up...or trying to. Maine shouldn't pitch this well all year. Kinsler has a sweet avg. Thome has no back.

Yes I would make this deal. I'am assumimg you have Kinsler at second base, so Utley is a drastic improvement and there is no doubt he is the best fantasy second baseman out there. Okay now you have G. Atkins who is off to a slow start but I believe he will have a second half to remember. Thome will ot last the whole year in my opinion, and Maine is a solid pitcher but nothing to write home about. When I'am in doubt about certain trades I usually look at it this way, would I have done this deal on draft day, yes I would have in a minute. This process helps clear up a lot of the current stats and e.t.c. Hope this helps your team

Definetely do this trade. Kinsler has not kept up what he did in April and is good to trade while his rankings are very high, Thome is injury prone with a big upside and John Maine-is good but to get the best 2B in fantasy baseball and Atkins is well worth it. You don't lose in this at all, you gain even if Atkins goes down. Go for it.
