As a dentist myself it sounds like you have an Abscess on your hands. An infected tooth, or abscess as they are called are extremely painful and will need antibiotic therapy. PLEASE call your dentist for an emergency appointment or take a trip to your local ER as soon as possible as this CANNOT be fixed on its own and there are NO home remedies that will cure this tooth, you need a dental professional immediately. Antibiotics and pain medication that the Doctor will prescribe will eventually help the tooth become less infected but once you stop antibiotics the infection WILL return and is usually much more painful the second time around. Infection from an abscess tooth can spread to the throat causing an airway obstruction and can spread to the heart and brain and cause very severe problems and sometimes fatal complications. PLEASE see a dentist in your area to discuss treatment as this can become extremely painful. Try taking Motrin (ibuprofen) for pain, this will help reduce swelling and will also help control pain. Also try using COLD compresses, do NOT use heat as this can cause the infection to worsen and spread and become more painful. Please see a dentist or ER physician ASAP. Good luck!

Here's my professional advice, which I am qualified to give as a licensed dentist:
You most likely need to have two medications to tide you over if you got an infected tooth:
1) An analgesic.
2) A course of antibiotics to get that infection under control while waiting for definitive treatment.
Without the antibiotic to keep the infex under control, the analgesic is not going to be very effective unless you are taking dangerously high dosages and put you in risk for toxicity.
Also note that the antibiotic needs to be taken exactly as prescribed for it to be effective, and it won't start to work right away-- it may take a few doses before enough of it builds up in your system to start controlling the infection.
If the hours are late and the dentist's office is closed, you should go to a hospital ER, have them take a look, and see if they can give you the prescriptions. When you are in pain like that, it IS an emergency.
Hope this helps, and good luck.

Don't wait another week.Ring your normal dentist number tonight when they are shut, and on the answerphone there should be a message giving a emergency number, ring there and tell them you can't stand the pain any longer and they should get you in straight away tonight.I had the same problem and went an emergency dentist on a Sunday night at 9.20 pm.They took the tooth out and gave me some antibiotics for the abscess. And it was such a relief to get rid of the pain.I know what your'e going through.I think if you go the emergency dentist it's free as well.It was when i went anyway.Good luck

Your dentist should have already given you something for the abscess. The dentist won't be able to fix your tooth until the infection or abscess is taken care of first. At least that is what my dentist told me when I had my abscess. Call your dentist and ask for a prescription for the pain. Until then, try taking some extra strength Ibuprofen.

You can numb the pain with a numbing agent like ora-gel. You can also take 800 mg Ibupropfen, or vicodin (hydrocodone), but depending upon the severity of your pain this may not help, and going to the hospital to get a shot of demerol will definitely do the trick.

You should try to get some ambesol or something like that that is a medicine that you spread on the sore spots to numb it a little. it probably won't take all of the pain away, but will make it better. Try that and a OTC pain killer.

call around for another dentist, my husband had never seen my dentist and developed the same problem, they did it the NEXT DAY!! same with my step-dad, the NEXT DAY!
first at least call your dentist to see if they can move the appointment up.
*Try ora-gel or something similar in the toothpaste aisle.
also before bed take 4- 200mg advil tablets (to equal 800mg) to dull the pain, good luck--c.

If you can get your hands on some whiskey......not to drink.....use it as a mouthwash.Let it set in the pain area for awhile then spit it out. This numbs the gums will reduce the pain. Also you may want to try about a cap full of hydrogen peroxide.

Talk to your dentist... you should be on some med's for your abcess.
You can try taking one Advil, but tooth abcesses need to be treated. Call his/her office and see if a prescription can be written up for you.
