Dog is throwing up and having loose stool--what's wrong?
I have a 9 year old chow/shih-tzu female who is afraid of thunder. Well, yesterday we had thunder and she didn't seem terrified--she normally doesn't throw up or have loose stool if she is terrified or scared. The thunder stopped around 5 pm and about 10:30pm my dog acted like she really needed to go outside. So I took her outside and she had loose stool in two places. Then at 12:30am she needed to go outside again and she again had loose stool in two places. She didn't start throwing up until this morning.
To make a long story short---I have been timing her and it seems like she is throwing up and having loose stool every 3-4 hours. The last stool she had was light yellow, slimy, and had a little blood in it.
About a week ago, we noticed my cat (outside cat) had a accident inside the house and it was loose with a little blood in it too so we thought it might be a flu that is passing from animal to animal.
Do you have any idea as to what could be wrong with my dog? Thanks.

With the loose stool and the blood, it sounds like a parasite. It can be very easy for a dog to contract a parasite - she can get it from drinking stagnant water, like puddles, or eating infected feces (gross I know, but hey, she's a dog) from other dogs. Chances are one of your animals contracted it and gave it to the other one. It's difficult to say what kind though, because many parasites could be causing those symptoms. Regardless, with the blood in it, it's not just the flu. You need to take both animals to the vet ASAP before they lose too much weight. Also, as gross as it sounds, you REALLY need to get a fecal sample from both animals and take it to your vet. He can test the sample and pinpoint exactly what kind of parasite they might have. More than likely, your vet will give you medicine for each pet that they'll have to take for 2 or 3 days. While they're taking the medicine, the vet may also prescribe Pet I/D for your dog (I'm not sure if they make that for cats). It's a soft food, that's supposed to be absorbed in the skin and easy on the digestive system.
Go to the following link for information on some common parasites.

Good luck, and I hope your pets get better soon.

When cats get loose stools with blood it in my experience has been coccidia and I believe it can be transmitted to dogs as well.
I checked this web site but its not any kind of guarantee that your dog and cat have coccidia however it sounds sort of like it.

If its not coccidia it could be Parvo even if he has had vaccinations it is still possible to contract parvo. However since your cat is exhibiting problems then it probably isnt Parvo since cats dont get parvo. In any case you have to take him to the vet to pinpoint whats going on and to get medicine. I hope this helps
p.s. both of these intestinal issues can be potentially deadly especially parvo so get him checked ASAP.

The weather is a coincidence. Your dog has a physical problem and you need to get both her and your cat into the vet right away. Blood in the stool is NOT NORMAL and can indicate serious problems.
Do not wait on this.

It sounds to me as if your dog has some sort of infection, now I would get the dog to the vet ASAP, and your cat, I wouldn't take any risks

sounds like a urinary tract infection. Get to the vet because your dog will dehydrate very quickly doing this, no matter how much water you give it.

IS your dog still eating? Does it seem depressed? It may be parvo. You should call your vet and talk to him...he can help you better than any of us can.
