Right now i have 4 slots each with 256 mb. What combination should i use for upgrading to 2 gigs. What way would be the most inexpensive?

just get 4 - 512 mb ram, just make sure you get the right kind, you dont want to buy the wrong kind, becuase once open, most store will not take it back

Well what i would do is i would buy a stick of 1 gig ram, then i would just replace one slot, that way i would only have to pay for one stick and i would still have nearly 2 gigs of ram. you would have 1 gig and 756 mb, thats nearly 2 gigs, its basically the same but its cheaper than buying two sticks.

but make sure its all the same kind of ram, if you have different kinds of ram it will slow down the other ram. make sure all the specs are the same.

what you should do is call your local computer store.

    thats what i would do.

    4-512s would be the cheapest

2- 1gb would be the best

then you could put the 2-256 in if there fast enough

but the 2-256s might have a slower speed making your 2-1gb slow down to that speed

id get 2-1gb and leave out the 2-256s

Do you have a Pentium 4? Buy a set of dual channel ram (2x1GB) to run in dual channel mode. It's more efficient and faster. Go to www.crucial.com to look at your motherboard to see if it supports dual channel mode. Otherwise buying 4 sticks of 512MB vs 2 sticks of 1 GB is about the same price.

if it can support 2 gigs the *best* way is to get two 1 gig sticks together. they will be a matched pair and run the best. They will be packaged together.

you can sell your 4x256 mb, and put some money and buy 1 of 2gb or 2 of 1 gb

It depends on what type of motherboard you have for the DIMM Slots. What speed is your RAM? Your motherboard manual, or go online with it to see exactly what configurations it supports.

4x512 which is what i have or u could get 2x1024mb.

personally if you have ddr2 then i'd get the latter because you can run them in dual channel and T1. If not, then buy the first but they must be ran in T2. Go into your BIOs to configure them

Please check with the maker of your computer or motherboard website. You must make sure that your BIOS on the motherboard can handle it first. Also check for BIOS flash upgrade.
