can animals tell whats spicy and whats not?

I am a chef and used to have a male and female cats, both would clean up my dishes when I had curry, whether it was the chicken or the sauce and I eat it extra fiery, but they say you can keep dogs and other small animals off your roses or out of your gardens by spraying a mixture of vinegar and cayenne pepper to fend them off.

I guess it is a matter of the way they were brought up, my last cat a female would eat anything I had, but would not touch shrimp??, those frozen ones you have at Xmas, she would eat cheese, bologna, muffins/doughnuts and ice cream, could have contributed to her dental problems.

they must be able to, if you give my dog something spicy he will pit it out. They have the same mouth structure as us with regards to tongue and tastebuds so they certainly would be able to. Also dogs have a sense of smell 10,000 tiomes better than a human so undoubtedly they can tell its spicy before its even entered the room!!

when you eat something spicy, the nerve endings in the tastebuds on the tounge get attacked by whats in the food, causing a 'hot sensation' works just the same in animals

Oh hell yeh. I had a dog who was raised up in a Thai curry restuarant until he was about one year old. He wouldn't eat any plain food or dog food. If you spice up his feedings or better yet give him some Thai spicy hot beef curry, he'd eat them all, and perform a dance around the house for ten minutes.

Yes - the reason my kitten tried to steal my curry on Saturday night without much success - she looked very fazed for about 20 minutes afterwards!! - and drank lots of water afterwards!

Yes, some can and some cannot. Squirrels do, birds don't. That is why you can buy birdseed that has been coated with hot pepper. The squirrels won't eat it, but the birds will.

i don't know, but once at the park, i gave a goose a piece of bread with spicy mustard on it, and the goose kept rubbing his beak on the grass after he ate it,.....

I don't know about other birds, but Parrots can't. They don't have taste buds, their tongues are very similar to our fingers.
