Annoying pop-ups?
Our computer used to have occasional pop-ups & we dealt with it. In the last week, at times, they're constant. We may have 20 in a couple of seconds. Slows the computer down horrendously & it's driving us nuts. Can't seem to figure out why all of sudden NOW?!! I had downloaded Spybot (supposed to get rid of spyware/adware) in the past, updated that & they still won't stop. Any advice on how to stop them?

most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser.
you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus. i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar.
firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser.
as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.
besides, firefox is much smaller than IE, so it run faster than IE. download firefox for free, Just have a try:

What you have is a Malware program known as Adware. The popups produced by adware cannot be blocked by popup blockers in toolbars or independent programs.
The most common way to get adware programs is by downloading programs and failing to read the EULA (End User License Agreement). In most cases, reading the EULA does not help since the language is in very confusing 'legaleze'.
Try using AVG Antispyware(this is the old ewido program and this name is also used when you go to the AVG site) and AdAware Personal 2007. These programs are designed to remove Trojans and adware programs. You can get both these programs at this safe download site.

try downloading and installing Stopzilla. It's a really good Popup blocker. However. You will need to pay for permanate use. Otherwise, you'll end up getting the trail version.

If you have Internet Explorer 7, turn on pop-up blocker and run through a 'tools' 'delete browsing history'. That should clean a lot of your problems up. If you don't have/use IE7, consider loading it up.

Get a decent internet security system like McAfee (not Norton). That will cover everything in one go instead of messing with separate providers. You only get what you pay for in life.

You use internet explorer? If so that is why. Internet Explorer has terrible security and can easily get this crap on your comptuer and all this is happening.
I recommend switching to http://www.mozilla.org/ Mozilla Firefox. It is faster, you can add a lot of cool stuff that youw ant to it, and it has a built in pop-up blocker. All that crap will be blocked with the browser.

Every browser has a built in pop up blocker
Internet Explorer :
Tools > Pop up blocker > turn on
Firefox:
Tools > Options> Content > Check "block pop up windows"
Opera > Tools > Quick preferences > block unwanted pop ups
If you still get more than two or three pop ups per day, you have malware installed that must be removed. If you follow all the following steps it should get rid of your problem and prevent future problems. All programs listed are free.
---------------------------------------------------------
Update your antivirus and run a full scan in safe mode
If you do not have virus protection install (only one):
AVG Antivirus 7.5 Free Edition
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/avg-anti-v...
http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Editio...
or
Free antivirus - avast! 4 Home Edition
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
or
AOL Active Virus Shield

---------------------------------------------------------
Install Windows Defender (full time spyware protection)
Perform a full scan.
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/s...
---------------------------------------------------------
Install the following five programs and run weekly or at least monthly. You need all five. They will greatly increase your protection. They are not a substitute for full time spyware and virus protection.
Ad-Aware SE Personal (update + full scan)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad-aware_se_pe...
Spybot Search & Destroy (update + immunize + scan)
Do not enable Tea Timer and SDHelper
After installation: update + scan + immunize
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.h...
SpywareBlaster: Update then open and click “enable all protection”.
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.htm...
SUPERAntiSpyware free version: (update + scan)
http://www.superantispyware.com/
CCleaner: Do not install toolbar option
Removes tracking cookies, unneeded files, history
In options.
Set to run when computer starts.
Place cookies you want to keep in save list
-------------------------------------------------------------
Note if a scan detects a problem but is unable to remove, start the computer in safe mode with the internet line disconnected and run a full scan.
In severe cases your system restore files will also be infected. In these cases you will need to turn off system restore to prevent malware hiding in the system restore files and reinfecting the computer during removal or during a future system restore. Turning off system restore deletes the system restore files.
Right click on "my computer"> Properties > System Restore Tab > Check box turn of system restore
After the malware is removed turn on system restore.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Additional run this time and monthly.
Microsoft Update "Custom Mode" install everything

Microsoft OneCare Live, run “full service scan”
