How to cheer Grandpa up?

I have a grandpa who is sick with a cold. He is upset that he will delay us in our next trip to France. He cannot eat any comfort foods due to other problems such as diabetes. How is the best way to cheer him up?

note: My grandpa does not speak that well English so please do not include jokes.

Update:

What if he has had a hard childhood?

my grandpa is the same. He has diabetes so he doesn't do much but complain about EVERYTHING! but my grandpa likes tractors so we take him for rides and he enjoys them lots!

My grandpa is going through the same thing except it's more serious. My grandpa is having heart failure issues, pneumonia, he has hardly eaten in the past week and his blood is thinning. We know his time is running short so we visit him anytime we can even though the hospital is a few hours away. It's obvious that he is cheered up by just having us for company. We take him out for walks and just let him talk to us ( i can't understand my grandpa either, except because his words are slurred). Sometimes all they need is to have company who they know that cares about them.

When my Grandpa isn't feeling well, we try to comfort him by listening to his stories and just being there to listen helps a lot.

Tell him how much you love him. Grandparents love talking about when they were your age; Their stories and friends. Ask him to tell you something about where he lived, or if he still talks to any of his school friends. If he's from another country that you haven't been to, or even if you have, ask him about it. Get him to tell you what it was like living there. Again, just keep telling him you love him! Good luck!

Ask him to tell you about when he was a boy, or sometime in his youth. Older people love to talk about their lives and share it with you. My father is in his eighties and he can sit and reminisce for hours. Seeing our interest and appreciation for his wisdom and life experiences always makes him feel good.

PS listening to his type of music with him is fun too.

Sometimes older people feel sad because they don't feel useful anymore. Ask him for help with a problem you have, and he'll recover more quickly because he'll know you still need him.
