Have you ever had Shingles?

I just found out last friday that I have shingles because of stress etc. I have looked on webmd.com for information about this disease but I was wondering how long shingles last once you break out with them and are they contagious. I live with someone and wondered if they could get it from me. Does anyone know?

Last year I had Shingles and the doc told me it was caused by having chicken pox when you are young...the virus lays dormant in your system for all those years and shows itself as shingles. Yes, it is contagious and don't let anybody tell you it's not. I went to visit a friend. There were twins there (girls) and only one twin hung on my the whole time. That twin got shingles in her eye. It was horrible. Believe me....they NEVER go away completely!!!!!! My back still itches and burns like crazy

Shingles is contagious only to people who have not had chicken pox. You shouldn't be around the elderly - getting chicken pox at an elderly age can be detrimental. Also, try to stay away from pregnant women. An outbreak of shingles will likely last 7-14 days.

I'm a nurse too and would just like to add a little something if i may lol. When you get chicken pox, the virus stay in your body around nerves. Stress can reactivate it in the from of shingles. They are so painful because of their location on the nerve. Last, a person with shingles should stay away from anybody who is immunosuppresed, such as those with HIV, cancer, or someone whose had a transplant.

    thanks

Shingles blisters are as a rule transparent, watery fluid crammed blisters in little clumps. They as a rule run proper alongside a nerve direction, thereby inflicting first-rate suffering. Ibuprofen and Aleve are used to preserve the suffering down, however till the blisters are long past, the suffering is undoubtedly going to stick with you. Don't placed whatever wet on it besides for the cream the health practitioner gave you. Impetigo IS painful additionally. I've not ever heard of it at the hands, however you not ever realize. Try Ibuprofen and/or Aleve. It is helping whilst I have shingles so it will aid with the impetigo suffering.~

Yes someone else can get them. Shingles are like adult verson of chicken pox. It should go away in a couple of weeks. There should be blister like places and that's what is contagious.

Just make sure your roommate doesn't come into direct contact and they should be fine
