DESPERATE! PLEASE HELP! 10 points for whoever actually helps me w/ this problem!?

I've had my computer for almost a year now. When I got it, it came with a LEGAL version of Windows XP and McAfee Firewall Plus installed. I've NEVER had a problem with my computer. Out of the blue, I keep getting messages that says my version of Windows is illegal and all of a sudden, my firewall quit. Everytime I log on, I get a window pop-up and say to verify my version of McAfee. When I hit verify it does nothing, but throw up some crazle letters and numbers up on screen. Please tell me how I can fix both of these problems without having to repurchase them. They are already installed and legal, just not working for some reason. (I just got my first trojan because my firewall isn't working) HELP!!!!!

10 easy points to first person to actually give me advice that fixes these problems!

    Virus problem.

Try a online antivirus scanner and a online anti-adware/malware/spyware scanner in safe mode with network to clean up your computer BEFORE you download anything.

To get in safe mode tap F8 when booting you computer.

    Choose "Safe mode with network".

Go to Start – Run - type iexplore http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html Enter(ok).

Do a full system scan. If something is found, delete it, reboot and do the same again in safe mode with network.

When that scan does not find anything you reboot again in safe mode with network.

Go to Start – Run – type iexplore http://www.ewido.net/en/ Enter(ok).

Do a full scan. If you find something, delete it, reboot and do the same again in safe mode with network.

**NOTE: Do NOT do anything else with your computer when scanning. This because you can start virus/adware/spyware/malware manually.

When no one of these scanners are showing anything you can reboot back to normal mode.

    ------------------

Now you need to get a antivirus program, a firewall and some spyware/adware/malware removers if you don't have it and run Windows Update. http://www.update.microsoft.com/

I use Norton Internet Security on my desktop running XP Home SP2.

On my laptop i have Ubuntu 7.04. No security needed in Linux, but i have antivirus and firewall.

    Here are some free programs.

Disable Windows Firewall after downloading ZoneAlarm if it's not done automatically.

    Spybot-S&D Free. http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.h...

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

    AVG Anti-Rootkit Free. http://free.grisoft.com/doc/39798/lng/us/tpl/v5

AVG Anti-Rootkit is a powerful tool with state-of-the-art technology for detection and removal of rootkits. rootkits are used to hide the presence of a malicious object like Trojans or keyloggers on your computer. If a threat uses rootkit technology to hide itself it is very hard to find the malware on your PC. AVG Anti-Rootkit gives you the power to find and delete the rootkit and to uncover the threat the rootkit is hiding.

    CCleaner free.

CCleaner is a freeware system optimization and privacy tool. It removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. But the best part is that it's fast and contains NO spyware or adware. http://www.ccleaner.com/

ClearAllHistory - clears browser history, cache, cookies, clipboard and remove other computer activity tracks. http://www.clearallhistory.com/delete-passwords.ht...

*NOTE: Only have one antivirus program and one firewall installed on your computer.

Anti-adware/malware/spyware are ok to have more of.

Also scan with online scanners sometimes.

    Hope this was helpful.

    Good luck.

For McAfee you need to uninstall and reinstall your firewall plus.

For Windows it should say register your copy on line and give you a series of number. Just call the 800 number and if the computer can't activate it for you then you will be switched to a real person. The whole thing should take about 5-10 minutes.

well unlike the other answerers, i will give my input on BOTH problems, possibly the version of XP and McAfee was just on a trial basis.

Unfortunately if i am wrong and it is something much more serious, then your best bet is to take the computer to a workshop place and get the trojan out and see what else they can do to help you, or you might just have to go out and buy a new operating system and a new virus program.

If i am wrong on all of my answers, then i wish you good luck on finding the right answer and getting this problem taken care of.

  • It defenitely sounds like a virus. The BEST thing to do is go to Best Buy or Staples, go the one of the computer desks, and ask them: "Is there anyone that can come to my house and fix my computer, I'm pretty sure it has a virus, but I have no knowledge in fixing it." Trust me, it works. My computer has been through a lot and I've found that the best thing to do is ask a proffesional or else you'll end up screwing it up. Yes, they can be excpensive, but they WILL ,GARENTEED, fix your computer. I hope I helped, because I don't think anyone on Yahoo! Answers will be able to fix it for you. Good luck to you and your computer!

You have a virus of some sort. If your virus programs are not up to date, and you can not rid this yourself, call the GEEK SQUAD, and they will restore your computer to working health. May cost you a few bucks, but it will be money well spent. Then get a better virus program to prevent this again in the future.

Hopefully you have the start up cds that came with your computer or that you made start up cds that your computer was suppose to have when you first turned it on...if so reinstall them!!! It should fix the problem.

What kind of computer you have would be a nice thing to know to help you answer this question.

Sounds like a trojan! Have you kept your security up to date? Contact Microsoft.com via phone, tell them of the message, after running a decent antispy/trojan software,(or one that hasn't gone out of date). Keep your points, I don't use, nor care about 'em!

    http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000...

run it, and it may find your problem. i hope this helps. i know this can get aggrevating but the work is worthwhile once its over.
