A written test will get you a Limited Use Permit. Usually allowing riding solo, during daylight hours, and no freeway/expressway riding.
For a full MC license, the permit and then a riding skills test usually on a DMV obstacle course.
Some states require a Motorcycle safety course, those that do ,do not require the riding skills test.

Check your local community colleges for rider education class. I took one and got 16 hrs of riding with instruction plus class room. When I was done I learned a lot of new skills and had everything I needed to go straight to the DMV and get my license. The class finishes with a riding and written test that is certified by the state. The DMV just adds the class to your license and takes a new pic and issues the dual license.

You can get the permit and learn on your own. Better yet take class from the MSF. You will get information from professional instructors and be able to develop skills on their bikes. I don't know if Alabama will except a completion certificate or not some states do and will issue a license without the state exams.

I'm assuming that all you have to do is pass a written and road-skills test. Check with your Dept. of Motor Vehicles, Secretary of State (as we have in Michigan) or whoever else controls licensing in your state.
It shouldn't be too expensive... the license part that is. The skills test on the other hand could be costly depending on what the regulations are in your state.
Good luck.

In Texas, go to DMV take written and riding test or take safty class at local institution and only take written test at DMV. It will cost probably $10 extra to have the MC permit.
