Clunking noise from the front end of my 560 SEL?

I have a 1986 560 SEL. There is a slight clunking sound when I go over a pot hole or speed bump. The shocks seem to pass the bounce test but they are old. Could there be bushings that have failed? If so is this a job that can be easily done? And what size are the bolts that hold the shocks to the A frame?

That's a big, heavy car and it has been on the road a long time. I wouldn't doubt you have a bushing or ball joint issue. You are gonna need a lift and know what to look for. Don't count on doing it yourself unless it is just a shock absorber issue. The shocks are a possibility. If you decide to replace them, I would strongly recommend factory parts or aftermarket Bilstein shocks to restore that great MBZ ride to like new. Take care of that German tank and it will take care of you!

I can answer part of this question. You should replace the shocks, it can't hurt. Also you really can't do this without a lift. Its not a terribly hard job but its work. Have your suspension checked by a professional.

check your front stabalizer bar bushings for being worn or one broke.
