All dogs can swim enough to get themselves out of trouble, but some are better swimmers than others. Most dogs love the water and you don't have to do much to get them in the water other than throw a floating toy in, some don't like the water and it is a little more work. The best way to teach a dog to love water is to let him play with another dog in the water. Unless the dog has had a previous bad water experience, it almost always works. If you don't have that opportunity, it is a little bit harder. Take the dog and a hot dog to a beach or lake. Stand at ankle depth and lure the dog in a circle around you. Give the dog a piece of hot dog for EVERY circle- the reward rate must be high. When the dog is comfortable at that depth, take a step out. Just keep on circling and slowly moving out until he has his feet off the ground. Be sure that the dog is comfortable at the current depth before you take him further. With time and practice, your dog should be comfortable in the water. BTW- Some dogs are more comfortable in the water when wearing a life jacket like this one- http://www.altrec.com/shop/detail/15076/ Also, it may be easier to start at a lake then a beach. Some dogs don't like the waves.

I have had 4 dogs and not a single one liked to go into the water. Usually, from my understanding, there are certain breeds that like to swim or cool off. Most dogs do not like water...but I think they are natural swimmers.

Some dogs don't like water and should not be forced. Keep in mind that most ponds are full of parasites from all the birds pooping in the water.

It depends on the breed. Most small breeds hate the water. But Golden Retrievers and Newfoundlands love it!

We took our dog fishing once. We threw a stick in and she instantly loved it. Some dogs like water, some don't.
