Start at an early age. Most dogs love the water, especcially big dogs, and you don't have to do much to get them in the water other than throw a floating toy in, some don't like the water and it is a little more work. The best way to teach a dog to love water is to let him play with another dog in the water. Unless the dog has had a previous bad water experience, it almost always works. If you don't have that opportunity, it is a little bit harder. Take the dog and a hot dog to a beach or lake. Stand at ankle depth and lure the dog in a circle around you. Give the dog a piece of hot dog for EVERY circle- the reward rate must be high. When the dog is comfortable at that depth, take a step out. Just keep on circling and slowly moving out until he has his feet off the ground. Be sure that the dog is comfortable at the current depth before you take him further. With time and practice, your dog should be comfortable in the water. BTW- Some dogs are more comfortable in the water when wearing a life jacket like this one- http://www.altrec.com/shop/detail/15076/... Also, it may be easier to start at a lake then a beach. Some dogs don't like the waves.

start at the beach, or with a simple wading pool, nothing deep. Run through the water with your dog. Toss his favorite toys into the pool...then go squeak them. Don't try to force him onto water, especially don't try to force him to swim. Once he really loves shallow water the rest is cake.

Bring him to the water a lot. Don't force him just temp him with his favorite toy. Throw it into the water, and just give him a lot of time. By the time he is older him will be pulling you into the water. Time.
