Is USA really a civilized country?

"A man was beaten to death by a furious crowd after the vehicle he was travelling in struck and injured a young girl in Austin, Texas, police said on Wednesday...

...The driver had stopped to check on the girl at the entrance to a block of flats when the group attacked him, authorities said.

Mr Morales got out of the passenger side to help the driver but the crowd turned on him, said Harold Piatt, commander of the Austin police homicide unit.

After the beating, Mr Morales was left for dead in a car park, Mr Piatt said. A preliminary autopsy listed blunt force trauma as the cause of death..."

    By what standards?

Compared to most of the world it's very civilized and safe.

Compared to Western Europe and other developed countries it's barbaric and very dangerous. Crime rates are amongst the highest in the developed world.

  • If your definition of civilized excludes any country where a small group of individuals commits outrageous crimes, I'd say there's not a country on this earth that would be civilized.

My definition would be that the government and general population considers these actions to be unacceptable.

I'm pretty sure if you asked the 300 million other citizens who live here, the majority would be disgusted by that story. Oh, and other bystanders called the police. And they are looking to arrest those who committed the crime.

For the answer that says we're afraid and angry (thought it said hungry before)... Move to Darfur. Then you'll begin to understand what those words really mean.

America is civilized in some areas but not totally. Americans make fun or criticize how women in other countries, especially in the middle east are being treated, but go to Utah and such and you have polygamy going on in the US where a man has 5 or 6 wives and government is not doing anything about that.

What is your definition of civilization? High crime rates, fear of fellow human, social disintegration, disinformation, abuse of civil rights (just to mention few), if that is your definition of a civilized country then… yes… USA is very, very civilized…..

If you hate the U.S. so much, don't come here. We don't want you. Funny how many foreign people bash this country, but they alllll want to come here.
