The type of guitar you is going to depend on the type of music you want to play. I can tell you that if you buy a really cheap guitar like Yamaha, they are harder to keep a tune, and most people that begin on these quit.
They next question is do you want an electric, acoustic, a bass???
And how much money do you want to spend????
For $300 a Gibson or Washburn are okay
If money was no object a Late 50's Gretch Nashville is an awesome electric.

From 1st timer to advanced, pay attention to how the neck feels to you,.. is it comfortable,..can you navigate around the strings & fretboard. There are variations of neck profiles (flat radius, c shaped, to list a couple). Your playing style can help guide you with this. You can use this rule of thumb on either electric guitar or acoustic. Also important, hold the guitar at its profile & look at the string "action" ( the distance of the strings to the fretwire & board & on to over the pickups (electric),.. it should be optimal,..not too high off the board or too close (this causes a crappy buzzing noise). The neck should be reasonably straight (not bowed back or forward,..this should be correctable). KNOW THIS-----YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. Rock on dude!!

it all depends on a few things, but the best way and cheapest way is start with an acoustic. it helps you build finger strength better then electric, and your mistakes will be much more noticeable. so you can learn the proper way to play. ive found for a begginner that epiphone ibanez are pretty good for the price. there are better, but they cost more. and there are cheaper, but they sound horrible, and are hard to play. they key to playing, is start out with less, and you will learn more!!!!

I learned to play on a Squire Stratocaster. It's affordable, flashy and easy to play on.
