Sort of depends on the genre you prefer.

I do not think you can go wrong reading the

"Foundation" series or "Robot" series (includes "I, Robot")

    by Isaac Asimov.

If a more military bent, or a woman main

    character is more your style

    I suggest David Weber's

    "Honor Harrington" series

which starts with "On Basilisk Station".

    I have read well over a 1500 Sci-Fi books

    and these are standouts.

    Intellegent coherent stories,

    with interesting characters.

I also agree that Frank Herbert's "Dune"

is a Masterspiece. The next two books in the series

Dune Messiah, and Childen of Dune are exceptional as well.

However, personally I am not sure the rest of the series

is up to the standards set in the first three books.

You have listed books by George Orwell and Aldous Huxley which are great choices.

I recommend reading The Big Three in Science Fiction: Books by Robert Heinlein (Stranger in a Strange Land,& Starship Troopers), Books by Isaac Asimov (TheFoundation Series (in 7 volumes) ); and, Books by Arthur C. Clarke (Chidhood's End, 2001, A Space Odyessy-Made into a movie)

As a treat read Hal Clement's Mission of Gravity.

    I recommend Frank Herbert's Dune

These were all influential authors and their major books were based on modern science concepts extrapolated by the imagination that have later become real.

At the risk of overdoing it, the sci fi novels by HG Wells and Jules Verne standout out in my mind as seminal sci-fi thinkers--esp Wells' (The Time Machine)

I have read all the books I recommend and many others by the authors I've llisted. I am devoted to books in philosophy but I still read classics in Sci Fi that I have missed. I do not expect I will have read all the books in the genre that I would Like. But its a goal as long as I can read and think and discuss.

    I loved the Q, Thanks

"Anthem" by Ayn Rand is similar to those two novels. You should enjoy it.
