Based on your critera, sounds like a lab is what you want (they LOVE water and are good around families and children.)

But also, you never mentioned if you have the time (and patience) to deal with a puppy. They are a LOT of work. You can go to the akc's website and contact breeders in your area (some breeders sell their show dogs after they retire, and that dog would be housebroken.)

I have friends who have both boxers and labs. I've been around both dogs, and boxers are really antsy. Labs are antsy when they're young, but tend to calm with age. Also, boxers have known stomach issues and you'll need to invest and test out different types of kibble before you find one that works for your dog.

Also, just because a dog or cat has short hair doesn't mean they won't shed; that's not the case! Don't rule out golden retrievers. Those dogs are wonderful as well!

You may want to take this quiz, this may help narrow your search. I would also recommend visiting your local animal shelter to see if there's a dog there that you would like to save!

I would go with a boxer. I have 2 of them at home and the only problem I have is that every now and then the get in a scuffle with each other (they are 2 females being the reason). They are great with children and other people. The only thing to be careful about is other dogs. They can be a bit fussy when a dog they don't know gets in their face. But other than that, wonderful dogs. Very athletic and ALWAYS want to play and most love water. Gets between 50-75lbs, has short hair... And I'll add thay they have the cutest faces!

What you are describing is a Golden Retreiver, but they are longer hair.... You might consider a Golden rescue... or a mutt with a Golden parent.

A Labrador Retriever is also an excellent choice !

    Boxers are very good.

All these dogs are intelligent and very high energy, requiring training as young puppies, and at least 30 min walks twice a day... maybe jogging. ... or swimming. The boxer will need a small introduction to water as a puppy, the retrievers will live in the water, if you let them!

However, when they finish growing at about 2.5 years, they can be kept in the house, because they will sleep 18 hours a day, as long as they are thoroughly exercised and trained when you are home. If you select the parents, or pay close attention to the pup, you should be able to select a medium sized dog.

To be good with people and kids, you will need to socialize the puppy as soon as you get it, with lots of people and gentle kids. After shots, socialize with dogs.

Well, I would actually suggest a pit bull. I know there is this whole preconception about them, but believe me they are truly awesome dogs, and fit everything you ask for. They are very athletic, are very high energy, and most love all sport including the water. My girl is 57 LBS and most I have seen are close too it, males a little more heavy. They have short hair and are a fairly easy to groom dog. They are naturally a VERY people friendly breed!!!!!!! Contrary to popular belief pits are only aggressive if trained to be so towards people. They are great with kids! ( I am a mother of a 7 month old). With any dog it is all in how you train them. Good luck and if you would like any more information on pit bulls here are a few sites:

Please check out your local SPCA, animal shelter, and rescue organizations. Hundreds of wonderful puppies and dogs are put to death every day for lack of a home. Large, active dogs are EASY to find at shelters and rescues because so many people want small dogs. You can tell if a puppy will meet most of your requirements just by looking at it, and as for #4 your puppy will be like that if you socialize it and raise it to be that way. Very few breeds are unfriendly by nature. A labrador retriever or lab mix might be your ideal dog based on your list above, and as I said they are easy to find. You're actually better off with a mix as purebred labs tend to be prone to hip dysplasia and a few other health problems. And when you find your ideal puppy at a shelter or rescue, you'll have the added satisfaction of knowing that you saved a dog's life and supported a good cause instead of putting more money in some breeder's pocket.

You just described a Labrador Retriever. Please look into getting this breed, they are awesome (I should know, I have 2). There really is no negatives about Labs except sometimes they can have TOO much energy and will chew or something "fun" to them to burn off energy, but they eventually out grow that. Because labs are the most popular breed in the USA many "mixed" breed dogs are half lab (both of mine again) and can be easily adopted at a shelter or pound. I got both of mine from my local shelter as puppies, one of them was scheduled to be put down the next morning. So, bottom line, I think you would LOVE a labrador, they are great family pets have tons of positive energy and good personalities....save a life, try www.petfinder.org

Sounds like you want a boxer puppy, short hair, weight 60-75 pounds, love the water & the baths, good with children & grown ups young or old, male or female, smart breed, easy to train, Boxers love to please, they also love to play ball and fetch. They love to run and they love their daily walks. They can be so funny at times, and so serious acting at others. You may not need a gaurd dog, but Boxer's are great watch dogs. We have three of them, and puppies on the way in 8 weeks! Good Luck in choosing your new puppy.

A Labrador Retriever is perfect!! It' s about:

    - 60-75 pounds

    - Affectionate, lovable, patient

    - Lively and good-natured, they love to play, especially in water - for they love to swim.

    - They have an excellent, reliable, temperament and are friendly, superb with children and equable with other dogs.

These dogs are watchdogs, not guard dogs, although some have been known to guard.

Some of their talents include: hunting, tracking, retrieving, watchdogging, police work, narcotics detection, guide for the blind, service dog for the disabled, search and rescue, sledding, carting, agility, and competitive obedience.

    - Labs bred from English lines (English Labs) are more calm and laid back than Labradors bred from American lines. English Labs mature quicker than the American type.

A Labrador Retriever sounds good for you. They're high-energy, LOVE water and people, short-haired, great with kids, and for the most part meet the weight requirements you specified (some will get a little larger, however). Labs are all-around great family dogs. Good luck!

    Lab

    1) super athletic and it's hard to keep them out of the water though sometimes it takes them a little while to get used to it

    2) they usually don't get above 100 lbs but they vary in size

    3) hair usually doesn't grow more than an in.

    4) VERY people friendly
