Clunking noise when I turn the steering wheel?

I have an automatic Ford Mondeo and all of a sudden, it has started to make a clunking noise when I turn the steering wheel. It is silent when I drive in a straight line. I have tried to have a look at what's going on and all I can see is that on the front suspension strut on the driver's side front wheel, the gaiter seems to be pressed against the coil spring, whereas on the other wheels the gaiter seems to be in the middle of the coil springs. Could this be the problem?

Does anyone have any idea what is going on and how much it will cost to have fixed?

THE BEST WAY TO FIND OUT IS TO LIFT THE FRONT END OF THE CAR ONTO AXLE STANDS THEN TURN THE WHEEL WITH YOUR HANDS AND LOOK FOR WHERE THE NOISE COMES FROM.

ALTHOUGH IF THE SUSPENTION GAITER YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT IS THE SLEEVE LIKE ONE AT THE TOP OFF THE STRUT THEN IT IS LIKLEY THAT EITHER YOUR TOP SUSPENTION MOUNT HAS PERISHED OR THE SWIVEL BEARING HAS BLOWN. THE SWIVEL BEARING IS A SMALL FLAT BEARING THAT SITS BETWEEN THE TOP MOUNT AND THE STRUT GAITER AND ALLOWS THE STRUT SPRING TO TURN WITH THE STEELING WHEEL

if you are looking at the gaiter that sits inside the spring then this is nothing to do with the cv joints.

Sounds like your coil spring has broken. Check if the gap from the top of the tyre to the wheel arch is different that normally indicates spring trouble, very common on mondeos.

I agree with the posts that say it's your CV (constant velocity) joints. they are like a ball and socket like your shoulder joint.

the are usually heavily greased up and covered with a flexible rubber boot like mine are. But the boots will deteriorate (dry rot) and crack open revealing the joint... and soon dirt and crap get into the joint and dry it out. when it's all dried out the ball and socket will bind.

that's what you're hearing...the steel of the ball is sticking and then unsticking and then sticking and unsticking to the socket as you roll along thru the curve. I guess the tolerance between the two parts is more in a straight line so you don't hear it...YET.

temporarily, you could look at the accordian style rubber boot on the CV joint, and coat the joint real good with CV grease. buy it at any parts store. that will instantly stop the noise from steel to steel contact, but the dirt and crap will keep wearing away on your Cv joints.

eventually you will have to get them repaired. new joints and new boots but maybe just dismantle the CV joint and clean it really well, gunk it up with CV grease, and put on a new boot. (both sides)

several hundred dollars for my SUV because it's a 4wd CV joint. you may just have front wheel drive and so it might be much cheaper.

I had a clunking problem whenever I turned my steering wheel and it ended up just being a broken link in the sway bar. Don't know if that helps you but it only cost me 40.00 to fix

    Hi there.

It sounds like a cv joint problem, or (less likely) a power steering linkage problem. In either case it would be very dangerous to ignore, as a worsening of the problem can cause great damage - and possibly make you crash.

A cv joint shouldn't cost more than £70 tops, usually, but power steering can be pricey if you are unlucky.

But get it sorted, it is too risky to leave.

    Cheers, Steve.

A couple of weeks ago my car was making a thumping sound. Come to find out alls i had was to lose bolts underneath.

I presume that you check the strut mounts. Also you might want to also check your ball joints, lower control arms and etc. To see if these parts are bad or just loose.

First thing to check is your power steering fluid level, if leaked out and is low this will make the noise you describe, if not that, then it sounds like a suspension problem, try going to quick fit for a FREE brake and suspension check before you start spending any money. hope this helps.

It sounds like a CV joint. I recently had the same problem. Go with what Herb B has to say on this problem.
