Well, if it's your choice that's kind of unusual. Most of the time the groom and bride pick. But if it's help you need, it's help you'll get.
Remember music is a very intimate part of our lives. It tells us how to feel and when we're blue it lifts us up. Making a selection requires a keen sensitivity to this understanding.
First you need to look at the subject: for the most part it's going to be love. Then since this is a very popular subject narrow it down to ... oh lets say generation. Make it a song him, his bride and even his peers would be very familiar with. That sparks a lot of nostalgia. If everyone can relate a point in their life to that song then you've got them and that would make the wedding 100 times better!
Now the music you grew up with is great but look at the rest of the audience. There will be a lot of older people there too. So consider going way back on occasion. Throw in some Marvin Gaye, old R&B, you know things like that.
The variety will keep everyone interested. Keep in the tradition of a caring love theme but don't use all ballads, some great love themed music can come in the form of reggae or dance, even hip hop.
So are you getting it now? Don't be boring don't be shy, keep the crowd entertained. And most of all pick a brand new song or a fairly recent one that will be all theirs for ever. Make sure it has a timeless melody to it, a beautiful hook and a nice beat. As far as their dance songs, let them pick those those are usually very personal.
Good luck oh D.J. of matrimony!
