How do I get my dog to stop obsessing over the cat?

When my husband and I got married he brought a cat to the family and I brought a dog. Both are wonderful animals.. on their own. The dog is thankfully not aggressive towards the cat but will stare at her for hours and follow her around the house and try to poke or herd her (cattle dog). She hisses at him and has slapped him but without her claws. On the bright side I think the cat is use to his obsessive attention now and is only peridically annoyed or inconvenienced when he is over bearing. My husband however is greatly protective of the cat and thoroughly annoyed with the dog, but this dog loves him more than me now. Any way to improve this for everyone?

I have 2 very big dogs, american bulldog and boxer, I just recently added a young cat to the mix and you have to block and address the obsessive behavior of your dog, when u find him staring and stalking this is refered to as "prey drive" u need to address it, a strong HEY or no, u need to find a good word that gets your dog to look at you, a treat sometimes works but u need to give it to him at the right time. even calling the dog to u and asking for a sit and when he is totally concentrating on u give him the treat and say good boy. the more u do it and try to catch him everytime u will be able to stop giving treats and he should respond to a simple HEY.

dogs are pack animals. They want to play with everyone in the pack. Cats...just aren't. It sounds like they have a pretty good relationship over all, and what the dog is doing has nothing to do with stalking or prety drive. It's more an attempt at social interaction. If the cat HAS claws it can take care of itself. If it doesn't it can clearly get away. If the dog gets too annoying toss him a ball or engage him in an activity. That's what he's LOOKING for with the cat.
