Although it is possible to use your Verizon in Israel (assuming it is "unlocked"), it is much cheaper to rent a phone when you get there, as international roaming is very expensive no matter what you do. With a rental, you will have free incoming calls and even making international calls is fairly cheap.

If you are interested in this, there is phone rental place at Ben Gurion International Airport in the arrivals hall.

If you are concerned about people being able to reach you, change your voice mail message to include your temporary number once you get it.

the best will be for you to get a pay as you go israeli sim card from either cellcom or orange.

if you are renting a car many car rentals offer free cell rental as well.

also make sure you call your service provider and tell them that u r travelling to israel and maybe they have a plan or a speciall u can take up with them.
