what is this plant/tree/weed? Please help identify.?

can you tell me what plant this is? I believe it is a tree because it has a root system that these shoots are all growing from. It is spreading quickly and we would like to identify it. If you pull up one carefully, usually it is attached to the next one and the next one...

There are no trees in the area that have similar leaves, so I could be wrong. Any help would be appreciated. We live in the Northwest if that helps.

Sorry these pictures aren't the greatest.

It is sumac, they call them elk horns, they have fuzzy limbs when they mature and grow a cone looking seed pod that is redish brown. They sucker up like crazy unless you keep them trimmed back.

this is really annoying... i know what it is... i've seen it a million times... but i never learnt the name of it... yes it is a tree, grows to about 9 foot and has these wierd fruits that are red and furry and about the same size as your hand... it is a pretty common garden ornamental in the uk. i will google it and re-edit this later if i find out its name...

i'm back! i found it. i googled the words 'ornamental tree, furry' and it came back with a picture of a tree called a sumac or sumach. look at the entry on wikipedia:
