The PC was created by IBM by accident. They had a big emergency because people were buying these little desktop computers and they didn't have one. So they threw one together with off the shelf components using an open architecture, all coordinated by one little BIOS chip.
Unfortunately for IBM, but luckily for everyone else, this kind of machine was relatively easy to reverse engineer and rip off. All that was necessary was to create a non infringing version of the BIOS chip. Everything else was open for use by anybody. Thus a huge free market of competing hardware components for PC 'clones' was created, instead of the cozy monopoly IBM was aiming at. Oops.
