Major League Baseball, after allowing Jeff Loria to basically kill the Montreal market with neglect, purchased the Expos prior to the 2002 season with the intent of contracting them and another team. However, due to legal issues with the other team they were planning to contract (the Minnesota Twins) and the Players Association, they were unable to move forward with contraction. MLB, continuing Loria's neglect, did nothing whatsoever to try and reverse the decline of baseball in Montreal, and shortly thereafter announced that the team would be moved to whatever city offered the league the best relocation deal. At the end of '04, they announced that the team would be relocated to Washington, D.C. for the '05 season and be renamed the Washington Nationals.

Well knowing Montreal is more of a hockey based city, they decided to move down to the states and re-locate in the nation's capital: Washington, D.C. They did this because
a) the ballpark wasn't in great shape
b) they were making that much money
c) Montreal is a bunch of puck-lovers (nothing wrong with that)
d) Oh ya they didn't have any fans

The team was moved to Washington DC a couple of years ago. They are now the Washington Nationals.

They are now called the Washington Nationals, they play in Washington D.C. and they still have the same players as they did when they were the Expos, they just changed their name.
