You can look them up in a Music Dictionary site:

A quick google search will give you a lot of information. Playing in a group also helps you get a really good feel for the tempo and expression markings. If all else fails, go to a bookstore or website (amazon!) and buy a musical terms dictionary, then you won't always have to run to the computer to see what the words mean.

I played in an orchestra for 4 years...
Allegro-is a "lively" or fast tempo(speed of the song)
Andante- is a "walking pace" tempo
guess you kind of learn what they mean from experience but here is a link i found..
