5-3*2+8*5-2; 28?

(the answer to the equation should be 28)

Update:

I posted this question because I saw that someone else posted it, but had all incorrect answers.

The correct equation is: [(5-3)*2]+[8*(5-2)]=28

[(2)*2]+[8*(3)]

[4]+[24]

28

So, I don't really need answers ... I am just trying to help the guy who posted the question previously, but didn't receive the correct answer within the "open" period.

Thanks :)

Update 2:

No, the point to the question is to get the answer of "28", as indicated by the ";28" after the equation.

So, in knowing that you have to get to that point, you put the brackets and parentheses where needed.

:) Hope that helps clear up the mess.

I understand that the person did not explain, but I caught the question anyway.

That is so nice of you!

The problem is that the original poster needs to put some parentheses in his/her equation.

As written, with no parentheses, we must follow the order of operations:

    5-3*2+8*5-2

    = 5 - 6 + 40 - 2

    = -1 + 38

    = 37

The way you worked it out is correct if the parentheses are shown, but we wouldn't have known that by the way it was orignally posted.

    5-3*2+8*5-2 = 2 * 2 + 8 * 5 -2

    =4 + 8 * 5 - 2

    =12 * 5 - 2

    = 60 - 2

    =58

    Another way

    5 - 3 *2 + 8 * 5 - 2 = 5 - 6 + 40 - 2

    = -1 + 38

    = 37

    If we use bracket

    [(5-3)*2]+[8*(5-2)]=28

    [(2)*2]+[8*(3)]

    [4]+[24]

    28

And if we use the Bodmas rule

    5-(3*2)+(8*5)-2 = (5-6)+38

    = 37

What way should we go for?

If i can remember back a year to GCSE... there is a nifty way of finding which bits to do first.. BODMAS as they called it (Brackets, Others, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction)

If each part of that is done in that order, you will have:

    5-(3*2)+(8*5)-2

    (5-6)+38

    = 37

Hope it helps (And ive done it right :))
