Can I spread lawn fertilizer (dry kind) from a coffee can or big styrofoam cup?
The yard is small (less than 100 sq ft) and I don't want to buy that device (metal container with 2 wheels) to spread the fertilizer.

I would definitely not recommend it.
Your best off spending the extra money to get the device. You will get better results, and yield more from the fertilizer.
If you use the cup certain areas will get more fertilizer, and grow more then others. Plus if they get too much it could kill the grass.
Also, you might want to check with a local lawn care facility, and see if it would be cheaper to get them to do it then buy the device.

Yes, a coffee can that has had holes just big enough for the fertilizer to come through poked into the plastic lid makes a wonderful spreader. Just be sure to follow the instructions as to the amount to be used for that size of yard. The bag will indicate on it as to how big an area can be covered by the total amount in the bag. Calculate and come up with the amount you need to use. Be sure to use it on a dry day and most should not be watered for at least 24 hours after you apply it.

be very careful Last year I spread fertilizer by hand form a can and ended up over fertilizing and killing the grass---Had to start over!! I then bought a little hand broadcast spreader for 10 bucks and it worked like a charm. saved most of the fertilizer for later too!

I have done it that way, just make sure you wear gloves and wash your hands after! You may not spread it as even as you thought so walk one direction (north to south) then repeat another (west to east). In fact, I noticed many times our gardener will to it by hand!
When you are done sweep the sidewalk so it is not stained by the fertilizer and water the grass to soak it in.

Of coarse you can. You can even use a big brown paper bag (paper or plastic) and sprinkle it out evenly. If you have a pair of spiked high heels or golf shoes you can aerate your lawn at the same time. Good luck!

A hand held device is available. But sure you can spread the fertilizer by hand, just make sure you wear rubber gloves.
