1996 Ford Escort 1.8 TD Fuel Pump Adjustment?

Does anyone know how to adjust the diesel fuel pump on a 1.8 Ford Escort - 1996.

I'm getting quite a bit of white smoke and have been told the mixture is too lean.

Update:

FWH. There are no other signs of water getting into the head. There is no emulsion on the oil cap and I am not losing water from the cooling system. The engine is not suffering from over-heating.

I don't think you want to mess with the fuel pump unless it's failing. It's job is to deliver fuel under pressure. Supposedly, the mixture is controlled by the computer, so, you may have a bad sensor or two or just a simple case of a wire off.

First thing you could do is a tune up or at least replace the air filter. You may need to put it on a scanner to allow the computer to tell you of any problems that it has.

The fuel pump is a fixed displacement type and cannot be adjusted. There is a pressure regulator in the fuel system that regulated the fuel pressure, again this in not adjustable but can be replaced if suspected.

If the car is running lean then there may be a requirement for the injectors to be cleaned as over time they get blocked up. Take the car down to a diesel specialist and let them have a look at it.

Black smoke - is an indication of a fuel problem.

Blue smoke - is an indication of burning oil.

White smoke - is an indication of water - possible head gasket failing.

It is possible to "tinker" with the injection pump settings but is a rather foolish thing to do. You are likely to do more harm than good.

Take it to a diesel specialist and get it done right.

the mondeo's with that engine used to suffer with the timing advance solenoid that lives on top of the pump, speak to local diesel specialist they will find the problem quicker as they deal with diesels all the time.
