Is there a difference between cursing and swearing?

I recently had someone tell me that cursing & swearing are different. Is this true? What is the difference? Is one neccessarily better than the other? And if you think that they are different, would you say that calling someone "b*tch" is considered to be cursing and swearing?

I guess they are different. The dividing line would be thin though.

An example curse would be: (Hit finger with hammer) "G*d d*mn it!"

An example of swearing would be: (Dropped detergent cup behind washing machine) "Sh*t!"

I think swearing is less foul than cursing.

    Depends on who you ask.

Swearing is name calling. Cursing is calling on outside forces to do a person harm. Some people believe in the power of the curse, some do not. But, it is about the intention and someone who curses wishes wrong doing. Whereas, someone who swears, is name calling.

Well, cursing is generally accepted as a nice way of showing anger.

"Damn you" is a cursing. "You lowdown f****** bi***" is swearing.

They mean the same thing but the latter is likely to really offend.

Swearing usually contains offensive words, words that are offensive even when spoken in normal conversation.

Some swear words eventually get worked into the language and become somewhat acceptable. Example in USA "You mother" is no longer offensive, but we all know the origin of that comment, which is of course offensive.

Cursing someone is just that. PUTTING A CURSE on someone. LIke saying Damn you to hell. That's a curse.

Swearing is the other stuff. Americans tend to swear with sexual terms(screw or F you), many europeans use terms inplying you are dirty. (filthy pig)

I think they're the same thing, unless the other person was trying to be smart and going with cursing as "setting a bad spell on someone."

'Cursing is invoking the assistance of a spirit to help you inflict suffering. Swearing on the other hand, is invoking, only the witness of a spirit to an statement you wish to make.

A curse is what it sounds like- you are wishing something ill on the person. "God damn you!" or "Go to hell!", are examples. Swearing is just using a dirty word in any other context.
